Finding Your Balance: Three Simple Coping Skills for New Moms

We understand that the postpartum period can feel like navigating uncharted waters. One moment you're floating on the joy of your baby's first smile, and the next you might find yourself overwhelmed by exhaustion or anxiety. We want you to know that these feelings are completely normal, and you're not alone in this journey. Rebecca, our Perinatal Mental Health Certified counselor, works with new mothers every day, and is here to support you through both the sunlight and the storms of early parenthood.

Today, we'd like to share three practical coping skills that have helped many of the mothers we work with. These are tools you can use right at home, even during those precious few minutes while your little one is napping.

The Anchor Breath

In our experience, one of the most powerful tools for managing overwhelming moments is something we call the Anchor Breath. This simple breathing technique can help you feel more grounded when emotions are running high or when you're feeling disconnected from yourself.

Here's how to practice it: Find a comfortable position, either sitting or standing. Place one hand on your heart and the other on your belly. Take a slow breath in through your nose for four counts, feeling your belly expand. Hold for a moment, then exhale through your mouth for six counts, letting your shoulders relax. We encourage you to repeat this three times, imagining yourself dropping an anchor into calm waters with each exhale.

The Five-Minute Reset

We often hear from mothers who feel guilty about taking time for themselves. That's why we've developed the Five-Minute Reset – because even the briefest moment of self-care can make a significant difference in your day.

Choose any activity that brings you joy or peace: sipping a warm cup of tea, stepping outside for fresh air, stretching, or simply sitting in silence. Set a timer for five minutes and give yourself permission to focus solely on this activity. We've found that these small moments of mindful presence can help reduce anxiety and restore energy, making you better equipped to respond to your baby's needs.

The Connection Bridge

Motherhood can feel isolating, especially during those early weeks and months. We've created the Connection Bridge as a structured way to maintain meaningful contact with your support system, even when you're feeling too overwhelmed to reach out.

Each day, choose one person from your support circle and send them a simple message. It could be a photo of your baby, a quick "thinking of you," or even an emoji. What matters isn't the content but maintaining that bridge to the outside world. We encourage you to keep a list of 3-5 people you can rotate through, ensuring you stay connected without feeling pressured to manage lengthy conversations.

Remember, these coping skills are not meant to replace professional support when you need it. We're here to help you navigate this transformative time with compassion and expertise. If you're feeling overwhelmed or notice that your postpartum emotions are interfering with your daily life, we invite you to reach out.

Our practice offers flexible scheduling, including virtual sessions, to accommodate the unpredictable nature of life with a newborn. You can schedule a session through our website or call us at (609) 264-6450. We're located in Galloway, NJ, and serve mothers throughout New Jersey.

You're doing important work, mama, and you deserve support on this journey. Let us walk alongside you.
